Stefan Johansson
Stefan Johansson is one of the more accomplished drivers in the world. His first championship was the 1980 British Formula 3 Championship while he was also racing sports cars winning two World Sportscar Championship races in the 1980s. which led him to Formula One beginning with Team Shadow in 1980 and a full time drive in 1983 from where he competed in 103 Formula One races driving for Tyrrell, Toleman, Ferrari, McLaren, Ligier, AGS and Footwork. His record included 12 podium finishes and 88 total world championship points.
In 1992 he moved over to the CART Championship winning the Rookie of the Year title with two third places finishes and winning his first pole at Portland the following year. From 1992 to 1996, he started 73 races and had his best season overall in 1994, finishing in 11th and competing in three Indianapolis 500 races.
After retiring from CART in 1996 season, he returned to sports cars and in 1997 recorded two major wins - the 12 Hours of Sebring driving a Ferrari 333 SP and the 24 Hours of Le Mans driving a Joest Porsche.
In 1997 he founded a successful Indy Lights team with drivers including Jeff Ward, Guy Smith and Scott Dixon. During 1998 & 1999 he raced for various sports car teams and in 2000 he started Johansson-Matthews racing competing in the American Le Mans Series with a Reynard 2KQ prototype. In 2001 he was able to campaign an Audi R8 prototype with backing from Gulf Oil and that year he raced in the European Le Mans Series, the American Le Mans Series and at the 24 Hours of Le Mans itself. 2002 saw him back in an Audi R8 with Champion Racing.
In 2003, he returned to CART as a team owner, running American Spirit Team Johansson with Jimmy Vasser and Ryan Hunter-Reay as drivers and in 2004 he drove the works Zytek before returning to a full time drive in 2005 with the Chip Ganassi team in the Grand-Am Rolex Series scoring a 2nd place finish at Mont Tremblant in Canada and 5th overall in the championship.
In 2006 he drove in the Grand Prix Masters series and occasional drives in Grand Am for the Cheever and CITGO teams. In 2007, Stefan drove for the Highcroft Racing Courage-Acura in the LMP2 class of the American Le Mans Series with David Brabham. He was due to race a Zytek at Le Mans in 2007, but the team could not rebuild the car in time after a test-day accident, and Johansson made a last minute deal to drive a works Courage. In 2008 he joined Corsa Motorsports and in only the second race in the LMP1 class for the team, delivered a podium finish at the season ending Monterey Sports Car Championships at Laguna Seca Raceway.
Stefan was born in Vaxjo, Sweden and lives in Marina Del Rey, California
